RENDERING AND ANIMATION

Renders and animation were produced with Enscape, Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

RENDERS

Enscape Limitations

Enscape had 2 main limitations when trying to produce a dichroic glass texture:

  • As Enscape is a real time rendering program, the caustics of glass were not achievable due to to the high processing that would be required.

  • Glass also did not have the option for applying Albedo texture onto glass where only single colours could be chosen.

  • The glass in Enscape does not produce any shadows. As seen in the image, the seating (applied transparent glass texture) is not visible.

Post Processing

White metal texture

This is used to produce the shine of dichroic film, as well as a realistic refraction of light. Background removed using Material Id.

Coloured metal

A coloured metal texture was applied due to the reflective properties of metal that could mimic glass. Inside Photoshop Blending Modes were used which will blend the pixels to create a brighter effect. Within photoshop, often multiple layers were used to create a diverse colour range. Background removed using Material Id.

Shadow

Using a solid texture, the shadows of the structure could be captured. Using the Material ID, the main structure was removed so the layer beneath, which was the glass layer could be seen. The result was a glass with shadow image.

Transparent

The glass layer was taken which would form the base of layer.

Final touch ups included changing the exposure, colour grading the sky, adding lens flares to enhance the dichroic effect, adding extra trees to cover the horizon line.

ANIMATION

As Enscape did not export any green screen or Material Id layers, the video only contains the coloured metal layer where certain pipes were changed to different colours to look more like the renders. However, I managed to create the effect partially on shots that captured only the glass without any other objects.
