PATTERN VS SURFACE

Reflection

This module introduced the concepts of pattern and surface with use of Rhino paneling tools. Throughout the module, the principles of repetition and scale were explored within a piece of terrain from the Tasman landscape, and the interrelationships between texture, pattern, surface, geometry and form were analysed. Readings also emphasised the growing importance of digital fabrication in terms of creating a more efficient workflow, as well as the construction of basic geometry through nets and folds.

 

In my composition, I aimed to emphasise the juxtaposing directionality of the fabric, which was a result of the fabric positioned on the woman's knee. To achieve a dynamic and fluid composition, I used four modules, which offered flexibility in order to manipulate the surface while also capturing light effectively.

 

Overall, this module required critical thinking as it was necessary to create an interesting design that was also buildable and feasible to physically construct. 

Process

The process involved the generation of custom modules to be used in the final design. To create a range of light to dark, I increased the number of creases. It was discovered that sharper curves with a greater number of grooves would hold shadows more effectively.

The final modules were chosen due their orientation position and flexibility.

Modelling a photostage in Rhino with a lighting set up to create renders of each artifact.

Studio Feedback

Following the feedback given from studio, I attempted to create the crease in the bottom left hand corner, but only managed to create one cell with custom module 2. I also used less point attractors in order to create darker areas with custom modules with more creases. Point attractors were also placed in specific locations to convey the 3 directional movement of the fabric.
