Subject: Studio Alpha
Year: Year 1

The studio brief required students to create a dystopian vision for Lincoln Square in 2030. During this time, ongoing wars have increased governmental pressure to get rid of refugee communities, resulting in frequent patrols around the Square. As such this new urban proposal attempts to reduce the need to retreat as much as possible, giving refugee residents an open space to conduct daily activities with little interference. The main aim is to create areas for teaching young children, political activism, and community meetings.

Concept

The site has been arranged using a radial system, where the built fabric of 3 main paths blends into the earth and will spiral into an underground area. Carving into the existing earth of the site forms a lower, semi-public area that cannot be easily seen from the main streets.

A 3 layered threshold system is created by going beneath the earth via a ramp, respectively creating a public, semipublic and private realm. This hidden space offers a safe area and is lit by light holes that are integrated into the translucent concrete seating on the ground level. Beneath, garden beds align with the openings and will collect any rainwater, offering spaces to grow plants. This is also is where the overhead steel structure will originate from to link both levels together. The choice of corten steel is used to add a flair of rusticity and warmth to the structure.
